ABOUT THE ARTIST
J. E. Rather holds a master's degree from the University of North Texas and works as a design engineer. He lives in the greater DFW Metroplex area. For years his art was nothing more than a cathartic pastime, but as friends began to exclaim over and request various pieces, he began to branch out. As a result, his pieces have gradually received a wider viewing, eliciting comment and interest, appearing in various publications and even winning awards.
Rather is married to bestselling romance author Arlene James. You may also correspond with Arlene James on her myspace page - she is his inspiration.
What I Do
I work in ink, without preliminary drawings and usually without even a definitive idea in mind. Rather, I let the unfolding design tell me what I'm drawing. Feeling, instead of intent, guides my hand. I'm always surprised by what develops, and the work is always open to interpretation, although I do title many of my finished drawings.
