For years, his art was nothing more than a cathartic pastime, but as friends began to exclaim over and request various pieces, Rather began to branch out. As a result, his pieces have gradually received a wider viewing, eliciting comment and interest, appearing in various publications and even winning awards.

He invites his viewers to employ their own perspectives and find their own interpretations of his work. His fondest wish is for the viewer to find as much enjoyment in the viewing as he finds in the drawing.

J. E. Rather holds a master's degree from the University of North Texas and is retired.  He is married to bestselling romance author Arlene James and lives in Northwest Arkansas.
